Using former towpaths and church paths, centuries-old grass dikes, well-trodden trade routes and sometimes forced to use passages over straight strips of asphalt, route makers Johan Vellinga and Broer Adema have succeeded in connecting the Frisian cities in a way that is as attractive as possible for walkers. At 283 kilometers, the Eleven Cities Walking Path is a lot longer than the other Eleven Cities Tours.

There's a good reason for that. While skaters and hikers generally follow the shortest route, this walking route selects the most beautiful paths. More than the cities, it is about the land in between and the paths that connect the cities. The beauty of the Greidhoeke and the Lake District is beyond dispute, but Friesland is more than pasture and water. The Elfstedenpad makes a generous sweep through the hills and forests of the Gaasterland. Past Dokkum it crosses the typical hedgerows in the scenic landscape of the Fryske Wâlden. In short, the Eleven Cities Path has opened up a beautiful part of Friesland, not only for skaters, cyclists and water sports enthusiasts, but now also for walkers.
